Massachusetts private-sector employers follow the federal OSHA rule (29 CFR 1910.151(b)) with no fixed first-aider-to-worker ratio, while state and local government employees are covered by the Massachusetts public-sector state plan administered by the Department of Labor Standards (DLS); when no infirmary or hospital is nearby, employers must ensure adequately trained persons are on hand.
Massachusetts childcare regulation 606 CMR 7.11(1)(a), enforced by the Department of Early Education and Care (EEC), requires at least one educator currently certified in first aid and age-appropriate CPR present at all times children are in care, with new educators having up to 180 days from hire to certify.
Massachusetts protects any person who in good faith renders emergency care (CPR, defibrillation, first aid) without compensation from liability, except for gross negligence or willful or wanton misconduct; there is no legal duty to rescue.
Nurses in Massachusetts are overseen by the Board of Registration in Nursing, which requires 15 contact hours per two-year renewal cycle (including one hour on sexual/domestic violence), and under 245 CMR 4.00 an approved CPR, ACLS or PALS course awarding contact hours can count toward CE; BLS is generally an employer/hospital requirement rather than a licence condition.
Massachusetts sets no statewide first-aid or CPR mandate for home health aides and personal care workers, but PHCAST and HHA training programs provide CPR and first-aid certification and it is commonly required by the facility or employer.
Massachusetts foster parents must maintain current CPR and first-aid certification plus safe-sleep/SIDS-prevention training, in addition to MAPP pre-service training and annual in-service training, overseen by the Department of Children and Families (DCF) under 110 CMR 7.
Online CPR and first aid training is recognized in Massachusetts, with Federal OSHA and the state public-sector plan accepting blended training (online coursework plus in-person hands-on skills demonstration) for workplace first aid and CPR; there is no ban on online training.
